My name is Amanda and I am an East Carolina University graduate. Go Pirates!! I majored in English, minored in Journalism and ended up in the journalism world. Now, I’m hooked and have been working for smaller, weekly newspapers every since. That can be construed as both a good and bad thing, depending on which way you look at it!
Ever since landing my first job at a small newspaper, I’ve come to realize just how different, and special, smaller papers are. We call ourselves true community newspapers. We’re the papers you’ll see your 100-year-old grandma in. We’re the ones sitting in community organization meetings, not to report, but to participate. We not only report on our communities but live in them too!
I’m currently finishing up some graduate level classes at UNC-CH (Go Tarheels!!) where I hope to eventually receive a certificate in Technology and Communication. So far, I’ve managed to get through 2 classes with dial-up Internet. I’m proud to report I only lost my temper once. I’m very proud of myself!! It seems like a never-ending battle but I’m determined to win it, high-speed or no high-speed.
This blog is an assignment for one of my classes. I’m very new to blogs and am trying a new understanding of the ‘blogging world’ and hopefully develop an intelligent blog on how blogging is affecting newspapers. I’m going to try to make it as informative as I can but it may take me awhile to get a grasp on WordPress. So far, we aren’t getting along. But alas, all things come to those who wait…or something like that.
I think your blog is gorgeous!
And I forgot you went to ECU — you should meet/talk with the Observer’s editorial columnist Mary Schulken some time. She’s an ECU grad, a big-time fan of the school and a proud Eastern Carolina person.
I’m looking forward to reading and seeing more. It really is pretty!
Oops, an addendum. “underoak” is just another word for Andria Krewson. Used an old WordPress account that I created when I was a bit afraid of using my real name on the Internet awhile back….
Hi Amanda – I agree, that photograph you chose really draws me in. I am interested in your findings, as it’s already been a topic of discussion in class…I think lots of newspapers will be interested in your finding as well!

Amanda – your blog is great. I love the photo and enjoyed reading your posts and agree wholeheartedly..getting used to using wordpress may require patience.
Amanda – I enjoyed reading your “About” section. I taught Spanish for two years at ECU (1994-1996) and grew up 20 miles from Greenville. I can’t say I look back with much nostalgia, although some of my relatives are rabid fans.
Amanda- I have to agree with the others. The photo is beautiful. I think I may have been one of the people on the discussion board early in the semester who said the design of the blog wasn’t that important, but after seeing yours I have totally changed my mind.
I too have an English degree and hopefully with this class can translate it into something useful. You were wise to go into journalism where you are putting your education to good use.
Amanda,
I like your site as well. I’m really drawn to it because I’m new to the whole blogging thing just like you. And I’m interested to learn more and to see where it’s going to take journalism. J-schools will have to start teaching new media almost on par with traditional. But I’m speculating. Good job!
